Want to test printing to different trays in NAV, but don’t have a multi-tray printer? No problem! In this guide, I’ll show you how to simulate tray selection using the free Bullzip PDF Printer, so you can validate your NAV report logic without special hardware or wasted paper.
Why Use Bullzip PDF Printer?
Bullzip PDF Printer is a virtual printer for Windows that lets you create PDFs from any application. With a simple tweak, you can add virtual trays—making it perfect for testing NAV’s tray selection features.
See the Bullzip Knowledge Base for more details.
Step-by-Step: Add Virtual Trays for Testing
- Download Bullzip PDF Printer and install it (default settings are fine).
- Open, as administrator, the
BULLZIP.PPDfile located atC:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\x64\3\. - Add the following lines to the end of the file, then save:
*InputSlot Tray1/Tray 1: "gsave /Times-Roman findfont 30 scalefont setfont newpath 10 10 moveto 1 0 0 setrgbcolor (Tray 1) show grestore"
*InputSlot Tray2/Tray 2: "gsave /Times-Roman findfont 30 scalefont setfont newpath 10 10 moveto 1 0 0 setrgbcolor (Tray 2) show grestore"
*InputSlot Tray3/Tray 3: "gsave /Times-Roman findfont 30 scalefont setfont newpath 10 10 moveto 1 0 0 setrgbcolor (Tray 3) show grestore"
*InputSlot Tray4/Tray 4: "gsave /Times-Roman findfont 30 scalefont setfont newpath 10 10 moveto 1 0 0 setrgbcolor (Tray 4) show grestore"
*InputSlot Tray5/Tray 5: "gsave /Times-Roman findfont 30 scalefont setfont newpath 10 10 moveto 1 0 0 setrgbcolor (Tray 5) show grestore"
Or, download my sample file (remove .doc from the extension before use).
Now, you can test printing to different trays in NAV using Bullzip. To see which trays are available in your printer, check out Part 3.
Tip: This trick also works for PDFCreator—just edit the
PDFCREAT.PPDfile in the same folder.
